As a globally renowned track and field athlete, Marshall Dill (1971) was a high school state champion and silver medalist (200 meter dash) at the 1971 Pan American Games. Marshall Dill was also an All-American sprinter for Michigan State University; during the 1973 indoor season he established a world record in the 300 meter dash.

Gloria Fuller (1975) won a state championship in the 440-yard dash, at the 1975 Michigan High School Athletic Association track and field finals.

Erskine Farrow (1980) and Jerome Rivers (1980) were state champions during their senior season at Northern High School. Farrow won the mile run and Rivers took first place in the 330-yard hurdles, at the 1980 MHSAA track finals.

Chandra Burns (1993) was Northern's princess of the sprints; Burns won state titles in the 100 and 200-meter dash, at the 1993 MHSAA championships.
